BEAR NOTES: The California volleyball team (3-0) will travel to Las Vegas Sept. 6-8 to compete in the UNLV Gamesworks Classic (featuring UNLV, Cal, Ball State and Texas Tech). The Bears are fresh off of capturing the Golden Bear Invitational, defeating Tennessee-Martin (3-0) and Northern Arizona (3-0) Aug. 30, and San Jose State (3-0) Aug. 31 in the championship match at Haas Pavilion. Cal was led by tournament MVP Mia Jerkov, who finished the tournament with 48 kills, 24 digs and 12 service aces. The Bears also had senior Leah Young and sophomore Camille Leffall selected to the all-tournament team. In Cal's first three matches of the 2002 season, it has yet to lose a game and has a .224 team hitting percentage compared to a .059 hitting percentage for its opponents.

CAL FEATURE IDEAS: Mia Jerkov - Top Cal player, member of the Croatian National Team, father is seven-footer former Olympic basketball star for Yugoslavia. Caity Noonan - Bear setter, returns from ACL surgery, is top grass doubles player in the offseason. Camille Leffall - Was Pac-10 All-Freshman last season - first Cal newcomer to make All-Pac-10 since 1996, is Bear record-holder for single-season hitting percentage. Leah Young - Lone Cal senior on 2002 squad, uncle is former football star at UCLA, is the writer of the Bear volleyball diary.

JERKOV SHINES: Mia Jerkov, a 6-3 sophomore outside hitter from Split, Croatia, was outstanding at the Golden Bear Invitational, earning tournament MVP honors. Jerkov tallied 48 kills, 12 service aces and 24 digs in the three matches. Against Tennessee-Martin, she led Cal with 16 kills, five service aces and 12 digs. Versus Northern Arizona, Jerkov recorded a team-high 13 kills and a career-best seven service aces. In the championship match against San Jose State, she paced the Bears with 19 kills and had 10 digs. Jerkov is currently averaging 6.0 kills and 1.5 service aces per game.

OTHER BEAR NOTABLES: Senior outside hitter Leah Young and sophomore middle blocker Camille Leffall joined Jerkov as members of the Golden Bear Invitational all-tournament team. Young recorded 20 kills during the tournament, has a .292 hitting percentage and recorded a career-high three service aces versus Northern Arizona. Leffall had 23 kills during the invitational, is leading Cal with a .356 hitting percentage and has a team-best 12 total blocks. Last season she was named to the 2001 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team and established a school record with a .381 hitting percentage (163 kills, 44 errors, 312 attempts). Junior setter Caity Noonan returned to action after sitting out most of last year after tearing the ACL in her left knee Sept. 7, 2001. Noonan was solid last weekend, tallying 103 assists over the three tournament matches. She now has 938 career assists, 10th on the Cal all-time career assist list.

HEAD COACH RICH FELLER: Rich Feller (39-48 at Cal, career 338-215, .611) is in his fourth season as the head coach of Cal's women's volleyball program. Feller came to the Bears after a stint as an assistant coach on the USA National Team and 14 years as head coach at Colorado State (1983-96) where he led the Rams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Top 25 national rankings. Feller earned his 300th career victory when the Bears defeated the University of Denver, 3-1, Sept. 4, 1999.

CAL VS. THE OPPONENTS: The Bears have a 1-1 all-time record versus UNLV (2-1), falling to the Rebels (Cal forfeited due to using an ineligible player), Sept. 13, 1985 at the Sunkist Invitational in Las Vegas. Cal had defeated UNLV 3-2 in the first meeting, Oct. 19, 1984 at the Cal Classic in Berkeley. The Rebels went 2-1 last week, defeating CS Riverside and Army, before losing 3-0 to Saint Mary's at the Saint Mary's Tournament. Cal will be facing Ball State (0-3) and Texas Tech (3-0) for the first time in school history. The Ball State Cardinals are 0-3, losing to No. 3 USC (3-0), No. 2 Nebraska (3-0) and Pittsburgh (3-1) last weekend at the Ball State Radisson Hotel Roberts Classic. The Texas Tech Red Raiders are 3-0 so far in 2002, defeating Fairfield, Kentucky and Hofstra at the Hofstra Tournament. Texas Tech's 5-9 senior outside hitter, Melissa McGeehe, was named Big 12 Player of the Week after recording 43 kills in the three matches.

JENNA BROWN: Had 12 kills, 20 digs and two service aces during the Golden Bear Invitational...has started every match as a true freshman...had a career-high five kills Aug. 30 vs. Northern Arizona, a career-high 18 kill attempts Aug. 31 vs. San Jose State and a career-high eight digs Aug. 30 vs. Tennessee-Martin...hails from Friendswood, Texas.

MIA JERKOV: Was the MVP of the Golden Bear Invitational...tallied 48 kills, 24 digs and 12 service aces in the three matches...led the Bears with 16 kills and 12 digs Aug. 30 vs. Tennessee-Martin...had 13 kills and two errors in 33 attempts (.333) and a career-high seven service aces Aug. 30 vs. Northern Arizona...had a team-high 19 kills with 10 digs Aug. 31 vs. San Jose State...has the team lead in kills per game (5.33)...is a member of the Croatian National Team.

CAMILLE LEFFALL: Was a member of the Golden Bear Invitational all-tournament team...leads Cal with a .356 hitting percentage, 12 total blocks and 1.50 blocks per game...is second on the team with 23 kills and 2.88 kills per game...had a .417 hitting percentage (seven kills, two errors, 12 attempts) Aug. 30 vs. Northern Arizona and a .438 hitting percentage (nine kills, two errors, 16 attempts) Aug. 31 vs. San Jose State...had a career-high 17 kill attempts Aug. 30 vs. Tennessee-Martin...was a member of the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team last season and established a school record with a .381 single-season hitting percentage.
