Sept. 4, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Five Oregon State gymnasts have been recognized as Scholastic All-Americans by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches.
Heather Justus, Jerra Lopez, Lindsay Nelson, Christa Piazza and Alisha Stephenson all were recognized for their academic achievements. In order to be eligible for the NACGC honor, a gymnast must have maintained a 3.50 grade point average for the 2001-2002 school year.
Lopez, a senior this past year, also received the honor in 2000-2001. A pre-communications major, she earned a 3.55 grade point average last year.
The other four gymnasts are first time recipients. Nelson, an exercise and sport science major, maintained a 3.86 GPA as a sophomore last year.
The three freshmen honorees are also exercise and sport science majors. Piazza earned a 3.94 GPA in her first season at OSU, while Justus carried a 3.64 GPA as a rookie. Stephenson completed her first year of college with a 3.56 GPA.
OSU has had at least three NACGC Scholastic All-Americans every year since 1990. OSU's five honorees this year is the most since 1995, when six Beavers were honored.
