Cal Beats #7 Portland in Overtime, 2-1
Sept. 6, 2002
The California men's soccer team took home their first victory of the season Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium, a 2-1 overtime win against #7 (Soccer America) Portland.
Sophomore Mike Munoz headed in the game-winning goal in the 98th minute, assisted by sophomore Calen Carr to give the Bears their first win of the season and his first goal of the year. Carr played aggressively the entire game, recording four shots and two shots on goal.
'We dug deep and came out 10 times harder in the second half,' said Mike Munoz. 'We knew we could beat them.'
Portland's Josh Simpson scored the first goal of the game in the 45th minute, a five yard shot into the left corner of the goal. Portland held their lead for most of the game, continuing to fire shots at Bear goalkeeper Josh Saunders, as he recorded seven saves for the day. Four of the seven saves came from Portland's Eric Cronkrite, as he led the Mustangs in shots on goal.
Sophomore Noah Merl fired in the tying goal with two and a half minutes left in regulation time to keep the Bears in the game, the team's first goal of the season.
'Noah made a smart move to step up and see the opportunity by moving out of the back field,' said head coach Kevin Grimes. 'Noah beat a guy from 25 yards out. It was a great goal.'
The game was evenly matched, as Cal had seven shots on goal to Portland's eight. The match up was physical, as three Pilots received yellow cards, including Sophomore Josh Simpson, freshman Heath Pearce and junior Eric Cronkrite.
The Bears next take on #7 (Soccertimes) Southern Methodist Sunday, at 1 pm at Edwards Stadium. This will be the first time Cal has played against SMU, Kevin Grimes' alma mater, since Grimes was a Mustang.
