Men's Soccer Wins Home Opener Over Santa Clara 2-1
Sept. 6, 2002
SEATTLE, Wash.. - The 12th-ranked Washington men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season in its home opener, edging 24th-ranked Santa Clara 2-1 in front of 1,054 fans at the Husky Soccer Field Friday evening. The Huskies improved their overall record to 1-0-2, while the Broncos fell to 1-1-0.
Just 27 seconds after entering the game in the second half, sophomore Brett Wiesner and senior Dayo Oyetuga teamed up to score the game-winner to break a 1-1 tie. Oyetuga served Wiesner the pass, whose 18-yard blast trickled under the hands of Bronco goalkeeper Steve Cronin at the 60-minute mark.
The Huskies got on the board first in the opening half of play, when junior Patrick Tanner netted his second goal of the season, a header off a cross from freshman Mike Chabala in the 39th minute of play.
Santa Clara evened the score early in the second half, when a Husky foul in the box gave the Broncos a penalty kick. Burke Ewers capitalized on the opportunity, firing the ball past junior goalkeeper Daniel Waltman.
Despite many scoring opportunities by Santa Clara, who outshot Washington 19-10, the Husky defense held tight through the last 30 minutes of the game, thwarting any chances of a tying goal by the Broncos.
'I'm really delighted for the guys,' Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'It's a confidence builder, getting that first win of the season in our home opener. A couple of freshmen played very well, (Mike) Chabala and (Mike) Cusenza came on in key moments of the game and did well. That's good to see. Santa Clara is a highly respected team with many quality players and it's a great start for us to get going with a win. Danny (Waltman) played well in goal. He came up big when we needed him to when we were protecting our lead.'
The Huskies will head East next weekend for a pair of games vs. the College of Charleston and No. 14 South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. UW faces College of Charleston Friday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. PT before its game with South Carolina, Sunday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. PT.
