Cal Men & Women Win Berkeley Invitational

BERKELEY, CA - The California men's and women's cross country teams hosted their first event in 15 years and showed why home team advantage can be so beneficial, sweeping both competitions in the first event of 2002. In the Berkeley Firetrail Challenge, the Cal women scored 18 points to edge out the Spartans' 41 points, while the Cal men posted 19 points to outdistance the Spartans' 43.

The Golden Bear women placed the top three finishers and four of the top five, with Bridget Duffy completing the three-mile trek in 16:33, winning ahead of teammates Lindsey Maclise (2nd, 16:40), Maja Ruznic (3rd, 16:46) and Sophia Marquez (5th, 16:57).

The Spartans' Judy DeLong won the race for San Jose State with a time of 16:51, finishing fourth in the overall competition. Ashleigh Nebeker (6th, 17:12), Anna Connelly (8th, 17:34), Rebekah Harmer (9th, 17:38) and Kim Nebeker (14th, 18:03) rounded out the top five for the Spartans.

On the men's side, the Bears placed the top two finishers and four of the top five. Senior Martin Conrad paced the pack in the four-mile race, with a first place finish time of 20:13, just edging out fellow teammate Carlos Carballo (2nd, 20:14). Kevin Davis (4th, 20:40), John Burke (5th, 20:40) and Craig Lee (7th, 21:04) round out the top five for the Bears.

San Jose State's Matt Heard was the only Spartan runner to place in the top three, finishing in third place with a time of 20:25. Will Crane (6th, 20:48), Jesse McLeod (9th, 21:41), David Leon (12th, 22:25) and Angel Hernandez (13th, 22:58) were the other Spartan notables.

The rest of Cal's women's results included: Stephanie Byrne (10th, 17:41), Katie White (11th, 17:45), Mary Faia (12th, 17:55), Lache Bailey (13th, 17:57). The rest of the Cal men's results included: Eric Roberts (8th, 21:27), Jeff Squires (10th, 21:48) and Dan Spence (11th, 22:07).

The Bears next compete at the San Francisco Invitational, next Saturday, September 14.
