WHATS ON TAP: California hosts the sixth annual adidas Cal Legacy Classic at Edwards Stadium beginning Friday, Sept. 13. The Bears (1-2-1) play their first game of the tournament at 2 p.m. against Saint Mary's (1-2-1). Prior to Cal's game, No. 1 Stanford (3-0-0) will take on Denver (3-1-0) at 11:30 a.m. Day two of the Classic is Sunday, Sept. 15. Cal faces Denver at 2 p.m. at Edwards Stadium. Saint Mary's plays Stanford for the fourth game of the tournament at 3 p.m. at Stanford.

GOLDEN BEARS COLLECT FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON: Cal started off the Bay Area Classic in the right direction, with a 2-1 overtime win against No. 7 (Soccer America) Portland. The win was credited to a trio of sophomores, as Noah Merl fired in the tying goal with two and half minutes left in regulation time to take the Bears to overtime, and also give the team their first goal of the season. Mike Munoz's header in the 98th minute sealed the win for Cal, assisted by Calen Carr, to give the Bears their first victory of the season. The Bears continue to lead the series against the Pilots, 5-3-1.

TOUGH LOSS AGAINST SMU: Day two of the Bay Area Classic did not finish as hoped for by the Bears, taking a 1-0 loss to No. 7 (Soccertimes) Southern Methodist. Cal was able to get off nine shots but was kept scoreless by Mustang goalkeeper T.J. Tomasso. Senior bear keeper Josh Saunders collected four saves for the day as Cal took their second loss of the season Sunday afternoon. The game marked the first time that Cal played Southern Methodist since Bear head coach Kevin Grimes was a Mustang himself. Southern Methodist leads the three game series, 2-1-0.

SCOUTING THE GAELS: Saint Mary's enters the game with a 1-2-1 record, coming off a 1-0 overtime loss to Cal Poly. Their second loss of the season went to University of California Santa Barbara in a 6-0 game. They recorded a 4-3 win over San Diego State University at San Diego. Two freshmen lead the Gaels, Patrick Lower and Derek Youpel, with one goal and one assist apiece. This will be the 23rd time Cal plays Saint Mary's, as Cal leads the series, 16-4-2. Their last meeting was in 2000 at Saint Mary's, where the Bears took a 1-0 victory from the Gaels.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS: Denver brings a 3-1-0 record to the adidas Cal Legacy Classic, posting wins over Valparaiso (4-2), Birmingham Southern (3-2) and Georgia Southern (4-2). Seniors Nic Hartman and Nat Borchers have two goals and one assist for the season. Sophomore Chirs Pagnant leads the Pioneers in scoring with three goals. This will only be the second time Cal faces Denver. The first time was in 1999 at Denver when the Pioneers edged a 1-0 double overtime win away from Cal.

LAST YEARS RESULTS: Cal did not favor well in the fifth annual adidas Cal Legacy Classic, posting a 0-2 record for the weekend with losses to then No. 15 Cal State Fullerton (1-0, 2OT) and Loyola Marymount (1-0). Stanford was the fourth team of the tournament collecting two wins.
