BEAR NOTES: The California volleyball team (6-0) will travel to Dallas, Tex. Sept. 13-14 to compete in the SMU Doubletree Invitational (featuring SMU, Cal, Texas-San Antonio and Tulane). The Bears are fresh off of capturing the Golden Bear Invitational Aug. 30-31 at Haas Pavilion and most recently the UNLV Gameworks Classic Sept. 6-8 in Las Vegas. Cal was led by tournament MVP Mia Jerkov, who finished the Gameworks Classic with 54 kills, 26 digs and seven service aces. The Bears also had senior Leah Young and sophomore Camille Leffall selected to the Gameworks Classic all-tournament team. Jerkov was the MVP and Young and Leffall were members of the all-tournament team at the Golden Bear Invitational as well. In Cal's first six matches of the 2002 season, it has yet to lose a game (18 straight) and has a .290 team hitting percentage compared to a .104 hitting percentage for its opponents. The Bears 6-0 start and streak of 18 consecutive games won in those six matches is Cal's best start since the 1993 season when the Bears started 7-0 and won 21 consecutive games. In 1989, the last time Cal made NCAA postseason, the Bears started the season off by winning nine consecutive matches, but did not win every game in that 9-0 start. In 1982, Cal had a school-record 11-match winning streak from Sept. 15-25.
JERKOV NAMED PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mia Jerkov, a 6-3 sophomore outside hitter from Split, Croatia, was named the Sept. 9 Pac-10 Player of the Week after earning MVP honors at the UNLV Gameworks Classic. It was her second consecutive tournament MVP honor as she was the MVP of the Golden Bear Invitational. On the season, she has a team-leading 101 kills, 52 digs and 20 service aces. Jerkov is averaging 5.61 kills, 1.11 service aces and 2.89 digs per game and has led Cal in kills in every match this season. It was the first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Jerkov and the Bears' 14th Player of the Week honor all-time.
OTHER BEAR NOTABLES: Senior outside hitter Leah Young and sophomore middle blocker Camille Leffall have joined Jerkov as members of both Gameworks Classic and the Golden Bear Invitational all-tournament teams. Young is second on the team with a .320 hitting percentage, 10 service aces and 14 total blocks. Leffall is leading Cal with a .434 hitting percentage and has a team-best 18 total blocks. Last season she was named to the 2001 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team and established a school record with a .381 hitting percentage (163 kills, 44 errors, 312 attempts). Junior setter Caity Noonan returned to action after sitting out most of last year after tearing the ACL in her left knee Sept. 7, 2001. Noonan has been solid as the Bears setter, tallying 226 assists in six tournament matches. She now has 1061 career assists, 10th on the Cal all-time list.
HEAD COACH RICH FELLER: Rich Feller (42-48 at Cal, career 341-215, .613) is in his fourth season as the head coach of Cal's women's volleyball program. Feller came to the Bears after a stint as an assistant coach on the USA National Team and 14 years as head coach at Colorado State (1983-96) where he led the Rams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Top 25 national rankings. Feller earned his 300th career victory when the Bears defeated the University of Denver, 3-1, Sept. 4, 1999.
CAL VS. THE OPPONENTS: The Bears will be facing Texas-San Antonio (1-6), Tulane (4-4) and Southern Methodist (3-3) for the first time in school history. The UTSA Roadrunners have lost six straight, last falling 3-0 to Utah State Sept. 6 at the Texas Invitational. The Tulane Green Waves last lost to LSU, 3-0, Sept. 7 in the finals of the NOKIA Suger Bowl Classic. The host Southern Methodist Mustangs last defeated Stetson, 3-0, Sept. 7 at the Best Western Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
