Donte Smith Undergoes Quadriceps Surgery
Sept. 9, 2002
BERKELEY - Cal senior guard Donte Smith underwent surgery for a partially torn right quadriceps tendon Monday and is not expected to return to the lineup until the start of Pac-10 competition in early January.
Smith, who averaged 1.1 points and 0.6 rebounds in 14 games last season, is one of three players on the roster who can play point guard for the Bears. He does not have the benefit of a redshirt season in 2002-03 since he redshirted his freshman year in 1998-99.
Smith's early season absence leaves Cal with junior A.J. Diggs and freshman Richard Midgley at the point. Diggs started six games last year and averaged 3.2 points and 1.8 rebounds while leading the Bears with 47 steals. Midgley, who attended Modesto Christian HS, helped his school to the California state championship final in 2001.
