Nnamani Leads Cardinal To Sweep Of Illinois State

Normal, Ill. - Sophomore outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani had a match-high 19 kills as the No. 1 Stanford women's volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep of Illinois State tonight at Redbird Arena in front of a record crowd of 5,641. Game scores were 30-25, 30-22, 30-24.
The Cardinal improve to 7-0 on the season while the Redbirds fall to 2-4.
Stanford never trailed in game one as the Cardinal took the 1-0 lead on a Illinois State hitting error. The two teams battled throughout the game with Stanford taking the 18-13 lead after scoring four consecutive points. ISU would take their first timeout trailing 20-24 and the second at 22-27. A Nnamani kill gave Stanford game point at 29-25 and a block by Anna Robinson and Jennifer Harvey gave the Cardinal the win. Stanford hit .395 with five blocks in game one.
The Redbirds staked a 5-3 lead to open game two before Stanford tied it up on an ISU ball-handling error. Illinois State would regain the 9-7 and 11-9 lead but the Cardinal overtook the Redbirds at 12-11 on a block by Nnamani and Sara McGee. Stanford extended the lead to 20-14 on another Nnamani kill. Three straight service aces by Ashley Ivy gave the Cardinal the 25-17 advantage. Stanford reached game point at 29-21 on a block by Harvey and Ivy. A net violation by the Redbirds gave Stanford the 30-22 victory. Nnamani tallied seven kills in game two for the Cardinal.
Stanford opened game three with a 6-1 run, forcing a ISU timeout. The Cardinal continued to press forward taking a 17-12 lead on a Redbird hitting error. Another unforced Illinois State error at 25-16 resulted in another ISU timeout. Stanford reached game and match point on a block by McGee and Katie Goldhahn. The Cardinal garnered the win on a Nnamani kill at 30-23.
Opposite hitter Ashley Ivy tallied 11 kills, four service aces and 10 digs on the evening. Middle blocker Sara McGee added 10 kills and six blocks to the Cardinal effort. Nnamani notched a match-high 11 digs as well.
Stanford is next in action on Friday, September 13 against Houston at the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational in Gainsville, Florida.
