10th-Ranked Husky Men Down Charleston 2-0 In Game One Of Gamecock Soccer Classic
Sept. 13, 2002
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Sophomore Brett Wiesner and senior Dayo Oyetuga each scored goals, lifting the 10th-ranked Washington men's soccer team over College of Charleston, 2-0, in the opening game of the Gamecock Soccer Classic hosted by South Carolina, Friday.
The Huskies picked up their first road win and remained unbeaten in 2002, improving their overall record to 2-0-2. Charleston dropped to 2-2-1 overall. UW freshman goalkeeper Chris Eylander made six saves en route to his first career shutout.
Sixteen minutes into the first half, freshman defender Gavin Hobbs served a cross from the right side of the field to Wiesner, who headed the ball into the net for an early 1-0 Husky lead. It was Wiesner's second-straight game-winning goal.
Sealing the victory for the Huskies in the second half was Oyetuga's first goal of the season, an unassisted effort at the 65th minute. Oyetuga picked up the rebound off his own shot and dribbled past Charleston goalkeeper Keith Wiggans for the score.
'That was a very important goal for us,' Husky head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'That put us decisively ahead in the second half. (Sophomore) C.J. Klaas also played outstanding at midfield, setting the tempo for us.'
The Huskies were able to fend off 17 shots from Charleston, compared to nine of their own. Four of Eylander's six saves came in the second half of play.
'It was a great start for us,' Wurzberger said. 'We're very pleased with step one of this trip and now it's on to the big boys. We will have our hands full with South Carolina.'
The Gamecock Soccer Classic wraps up Sunday, Sept. 15, as Washington faces South Carolina, at 10:30 a.m. PT. The game will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.uscsports.com.
