Cal Volleyball Remains Undefeated With 3-0 Victory Over Texas-San Antonio

DALLAS, TX - The University of California women's volleyball team (7-0) remained undefeated with a 3-0 victory (30-8, 30-20, 30-27) over Texas-San Antonio (1-7), Friday at the DoubleTree Invitational in Dallas, Tex. The Bears are 7-0 and have won all 21 games in those seven matches this season.
Cal's 7-0 record ties the school's best start since 1993,when the Bears also started off the season 7-0 and won 21 straight games.
Against Texas-San Antonio, Cal was led by senior outside hitter Leah Young and sophomore outside hitter Mia Jerkov with 11 kills apiece. Jerkov also had a team-best .409 hitting percentage (11 kills, two errors, 22 attempts), while freshman middle blocker Alicia Powers had a team-high 13 digs. Fellow freshman Jenna Brown added 11 digs and junior setter Caity Noonan had 37 assists and five service aces.
The Bears were able to roll in the first game, winning by the largest margin of any game this season, 30-8. Jerkov paced Cal with seven kills and a service ace. Game two was much closer with the Bears trailing a one point, 7-3. Cal finally took a 10-9 lead on a service ace by Powers and was able to regroup to win 30-20.
The Bears had the work the hardest in game three. The contest was tied 23-23, but Cal outscored UTSA, 7-4, the rest of the way to win, 30-27. Key plays for the Bears in the final stretch were three kills by Young, a service ace by junior outside hitter Jessica Zatica, block assists by Powers and Brown and the match-ending kill by Brown.
Cal will next face Tulane at 10 a.m. and Southern Methodist at 7 p.m. Saturday in the second day of the DoubleTree Invitational. Cal begins conference play against defending national champion Stanford, Friday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Stanford.
