Friday The 13th Proves Lucky For Women's Soccer
Sept. 13, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Sophomore goalkeeper Julie Peterson tied a school record with her third straight shutout Friday and the No. 21 USC Trojans defeated the Vanderbilt Commodores, 2-0, at the Wake Forest adidas Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. Peterson made four saves to tie the record set by Shaelyn Fernandes last year (Oct. 26-Nov. 2, 2001).
USC (2-2-1) scored both goals in the second half. Senior defender Ali Fennell scored her first goal of the season at 50:25 with an unassisted goal on a free kick from 20 yards. Junior forward Jessica Edwards recorded her first goal of the season at 69:43 with a one-on-one situation in the box. Vanderbilt fell to 1-2 on the season.
'We looked a little fatigued at the start, but we played with more intensity in the second half,' said USC head coach Jim Millinder. 'Vanderbilt was a better team than when we saw them three years ago. I thought Julie had another strong game and led our defense.'
USC faces No. 25 Wake Forest on Sunday (Sept. 15).
