Huskies Fall to Denver 1-0 in Women's Soccer
Sept. 13, 2002
PORTLAND, Ore. - Katie Antongiovanni scored the lone goal 13 minutes into the second half Friday, lifting Denver to a 1-0 win over 14th-ranked Washington in the first round of the Portland Nike Invitational women's soccer tournament at Merlo Field.
The Huskies (3-2) dropped their second straight game, including Sunday's 5-1 loss at top-ranked North Carolina. Denver remained undefeated, improving to 2-0-2.
Senior goalkeeper Hope Solo played for Washington after missing the last two games while she trained with the U.S. National Team. The 2001 Pac-10 Player of the Year registered six saves, but yielded her first goal of the season. Erica Izard saved eight shots for the Pioneers who were outshot 16-13.
Camile Flenniken set up the Denver goal, slotting a through ball toward the UW goal. Antongiovanni controlled the pass and pushed a shot from the right side that slid past Solo and into the left corner of the goal at 57:40.
Washington pressured the Pioneers defense for the remainder of the game, but was unable to net the equalizer. The Huskies attempted the final four shots of the game, including a header by Jaime Carstensen off a corner kick by Melissa Bennett in the 87th minute. That final attempt was blocked by a Denver defender.
The Huskies return to action Sunday to meet Cal State Fullerton in the final round of the Portland tournament.
