Sept. 13, 2002
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Arizona men's golf team got off to a good start in its first action of the season Friday, as the Wildcats stand in third place after 36 holes of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate.
Through the first two rounds of action, Arizona's 575 (-1) team total puts the team in third place just six strokes off the pace. Host New Mexico leads with a two-round 569 (-7), one stroke ahead of UNLV. Bolstered by four rounds at par or better in the opening 18 holes, the fourth-ranked Wildcats finished the first round in second place with a 284 (-4) total, but gave three shots back in the afternoon's second round.
Individually, three Wildcats stand in the top 10, led by Ricky Barnes. The senior from Stockton, Calif., shot a 71-69=140 (-4) and is in third place heading into Saturday's final round. Barnes, who won the 2002 NCAA West Regional on this same course, is a combined 10-under-par over his last five rounds at New Mexico's Championship Course. New Mexico's Michael Letzig leads the 97-man field with a 137 (-7) total.
Joining Barnes in the top 10 are juniors Chris Nallen and Andy Connell. Nallen fired a 71-71=142 (-2) to tie for fifth place, while Connell's one-under 143 (70-73) puts him in a six-way tie for eighth place. All told, Arizona golfers posted seven sub-par rounds on Friday.
Also competing for the Wildcats were senior Reid Hatley, who is tied for 24th place at 146 (+2), sophomore Kipp Riehle, who is tied for 43rd place at 149 (+5), freshman Blaine Peffley, who is tied for 48th place at 150 (+6), and sophomore Nathan Lashley, who is tied for 70th place at 154 (+10).
The 48th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate concludes Saturday at the Championship Course, a par 72, 7,272-yard layout. The event is hosted by the University of New Mexico.
