Beavers Fall To No. 20 North Carolina In Four Games
Sept. 14, 2002
MINNEAPOLIS - Oregon State had its chances to come away with the upset, but No. 20 North Carolina defeated the Beavers, 3-1, at the Nike Invitational to remain unbeaten on the season. The 30-18, 25-30, 30-28, 30-27 win upped UNC's record to 8-0, while OSU dropped to 5-2.
The Beavers actually had more kills (68-55) and more digs (92-68) than the Tar Heels, but hitting errors proved costly. While OSU had 68 kills, it also had 45 errors to finish the match with a .119 hitting percentage. UNC had only 55 kills, but it made only 20 errors for a .198 mark.
'Our errors hurt us. If you total up our attack errors, service errors and receiving errors, that's 59 of their points. I'll give them credit for their 14 blocks, but we still gave them 45 points off our errors. That's too many,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'Even with all those errors, we still had opportunities to win. The potential is there.'
With the exception of game one, when the Beavers hit -.022 in a game that was never really close, OSU had several opportunities to hand UNC its first loss of the year.
The Beavers jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game two, withstood a 4-0 Tar Heel run and kept the lead until UNC tied it up at 24-24. OSU scored six of the final seven points, with UNC's only point coming from a Beaver service error, to tie up the match.
OSU started strong again in game three, leading 20-13 before UNC strung together a 6-0 run to inch within a point of the Beavers. OSU maintained the lead until Laura Green's kill tied the game at 24-24. After four other ties, UNC put the comeback victory in the books by scoring the final two points of the game off OSU hitting errors.
The Beavers also led late in game four, holding a 24-23 advantage before UNC scored three straight points to take the lead for the rest of the match.
Four OSU players finished the match with double-doubles. Megan McMillan led all players with a career-high 20 kills to go along with 10 digs. Joscelyn Hannaford (13 kills/team-high 16 digs), Allison Lawrence (13 kills/career-high 14 digs) and Laura Collins (64 assists/15 digs) also registered double-doubles.
Green led the Tar Heels with 15 kills and 19 digs, and Malaika Underwood had 10 kills for UNC.
The Beavers wrap up the Nike Invitational with a match against Ball State at 3 p.m. PDT.
