UA Soccer Falls to Oklahoma, 2-0
Sept. 15, 2002
Norman, Okla. (Sept. 15) - Playing its third straight match on the road, the University of Arizona women's soccer team was shutout, 2-0, at Oklahoma on Sunday. The Wildcats are 3-1-1 on the season, while the Sooners improved to a perfect 6-0-0.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Sooners held an 8-5 edge in total shots at the break, but Arizona had the 3-2 advantage in shots on-goal for the period. Oklahoma's Logan Womack struck quickly in the second half, breaking the shutout with her goal in the 48th minute. Krissy Dawson capped the win just four minutes later with another unassisted tally at 51:21.
Senior midfielder Naomi Chu (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) came off the bench to lead Arizona with three shots, including two on-goal. Freshman forward Mallory Miller (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS) also had three shots, one on-goal, while sophomore forward Candice Wilks (Altadena, Calif./LaSalle HS) registered a pair of shots, with one on-goal. Sophomore defender Vanesha Bailey (Las Vegas, Nev./Cimarron-Memorial HS) recorded a shot as well. Freshman goalkeeper Amanda Martin (Franklin, Tenn. HS) recorded four saves in the match.
'This is the first time where our starting nine underclassmen really came into play,' said third-year head coach Cathy Klein. 'We looked very inexperienced out there. A game like this shows us how good we can become because we have the tools to compete.
'Oklahoma is a very well-coached and very organized team. I expect to see them in the NCAA tournament this year. They scored quickly after the half, but that was our inexperience and their maturity showing through. I'm not disappointed that we lost to a better team - I am excited about the potential I see in us.'
The Wildcats return home next weekend for the first time in three weeks, facing San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. at Murphey Stadium (15th Street and Plumer Avenue).
