Beavs In Third Place At Shanico Invitational, 11 Shots Back Of Leader Cal

Sept. 16, 2002

Oregon State freshman Leah Whiting made her presence known on Monday, stepping into the No. 1 position and earning a tie for fourth by firing a 2-over 146 through two rounds at a wet OSU/Shanico Invitational women's golf tournament.

At a damp par -72 Trysting Tree Golf Club, Whiting, from Hilo, Haw., led the Beavers to third place with one round remaining in the 18-team tournament.

OSU, which posted scores of 298 in both rounds, is 11 shots back of leader California at 596. UCLA stands two shots out of the lead at 587.

Whiting carded a cool pair of 73s on the day, and is in a three-way tie for fourth among the 98-player field with Allison Rella of Colorado and Claire Dury of California.

Idaho's Nicole Keller grabbed the lead with a three-under 141, giving her a two-shot cushion over California's Vikki Laing heading into Tuesday's 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.

Ashlei Pendleton, who opened with a 72, and Stacie Ferguson posted scores of 150, ending the first day of their senior years in a tie for 20th.

'They came out ready today,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said of her team. 'We played the course seven out of the last eight days, so they really knew the course coming into the tournament.

As for Whiting, she is proving that her spot in the No. 1 position is no fluke.

'Leah came in as a freshman and qualified for the number-one spot,' Lakowske said. 'She's very calm and even on the golf course - you don't see any ups and downs. She doubled the fifth hole, and came back with a birdie on No. 6. She doubled No. 11 and came back with a great up-and-down on No. 12. She just stays very even-tempered.'

Laura Skinner carded the low round of the day among the Beavers, firing a 71 in the second round on the heels of an 80. OSU's fifth player, Alex Lucio, shot 158.

Oregon's Therese Winslow helped the Ducks to sixth place by firing the low round of the tournament so far, signing for a 69. Oregon is one shot back of fifth-place San Jose State, and 10 behind Colorado, which is in fourth.

All 10 players on OSU's active roster played either as an individual, whose scores do not count towards OSU's team total, or as one of the five-member squad - junior Marylyn Brand is redshirting this year.

Among the individuals for Oregon State, Albany, Ore., native Kelly Ferris led the way by carding rounds of 79 and 76 for a 155. She is tied for ninth.

Play concludes with an 8:30 shotgun start Tuesday morning. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.
