Football Players of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Quarterback Kyle Boller and punt returner Jemeel Powell of California and safety Troy Polamalu of USC have been named Pac-10 Players of the Week in football.
Boller and Powell played key roles in California's 46-22 upset road win at No. 15-ranked Michigan State. Powell, a senior from Los Angeles, Calif., gave California a jump-start to the victory by opening the scoring with an electrifying 90-yard punt return for a touchdown. In all, Powell had three punt returns for 103 yards and the Cal return teams amassed 207 yards on six punt and kickoff returns.
Boller, a senior from Newhall, Calif., had a hand in four touchdowns, getting scores by passing, rushing and receiving. Boller completed 19 of 33 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns of 23 and 54 yards. In addition, he scored on a 2-yard run and on a 14-yard pass reception on a trick play.
Polamalu, a senior from Tenmile, Ore., was the defensive leader in USC's 40-3 upset win at No. 18-ranked Colorado. The All-America safety led USC with a team-high 11 tackles as the Trojan defense completely dismantled Colorado. USC's defense limited Colorado to four first downs and 61 yards total offense--37 yards rushing and 24 yards passing.
In a week of oustanding offensive performances, others nominated for offensive player of the week honors were quarterbacks Andrew Walter of Arizona State, Derek Anderson of Oregon State, Jason Johnson of Arizona and Cory Paus of UCLA and tailback Sultan McCullough of USC. Also nominated on defense were linebackers Spencer Havner of UCLA, Lance Briggs of Arizona and Nick Barnett of Oregon State, backs James Bethea of California and Virgil Williams of Washington State and tackle Igor Olshansky of Oregon. Kicker Sean Keel of Arizona, linebacker Jamar Williams of Arizona State and punters Jose Arroyo of Oregon, Nate Fikse of UCLA, Tom Malone of USC and Kyle Basler of Washington State were nominated for special teams play.
