Ducks Take Fourth at Shanico Invitational for Their Highest Finish in Two Years
Sept. 17, 2002
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The University of Oregon women's golf team posted its highest finish in more than two years, shooting a final round 303 to finish fourth at the Shanico Invitational under rainy conditions Tuesday at the par-72, 6,072-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club.
For the second straight round, Oregon played without No. 1 golfer Lacy Erickson, who is suffering from mononucleosis. But the Ducks got top 10 finishes from freshman Therese Wenslow and sophomore Johnna Nealy. Wenslow, who set a freshman record with a 69 Monday, finished with a 73 to tie for fifth at 221. Nealy, a Grants Pass, Ore., native, shot a 74 Tuesday to tie for 10th at 223.
'Therese played a very solid round of golf with a few bogeys and a few birdies,' said Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard. 'Johnna played out of sight. She was 3-under at one point and gave a few back, but she had some incredible stretches, especially in these conditions.'
Oregon's fourth place finish was its highest yet in two-plus seasons under Rouillard, and was the best for the school since the Ducks won the 2000 Lady Aztec Invitational.
California claimed the Shanico Invitational team title for the second year in a row, closing with a 299 to finish at 884. The Golden Bears defeated UCLA and host Oregon State, who both finished at 893, by nine strokes. The Ducks were next at 911, followed by Colorado, which started the day 10 strokes ahead of the Ducks, at 916 and San Jose State at 917.
The Ducks also go top 50 finishes from freshmen Erin Andrews, who tied for 40th at 233, and Michelle Timpani, who tied for 42nd at 234, as Erickson's withdrawal forced the Ducks to count scores from three freshmen and a sophomore in the final two rounds.
'I really had no expectations going into this tournament,' said Rouillard. 'I felt we were capable of being a better team than last year and I think the freshmen proved that the level of competition on our team has increased, and that will help everyone on this team become better golfers.'
The Ducks return to action Oct. 7-9 for the University of Washington's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.
