Four Ducks Ranked in Preseason Tennis Polls
Sept. 17, 2002
EUGENE, Ore. - Three Ducks from the women's tennis team joined one Duck from the men's side in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason rankings. Daria Panova is ranked No. 44 in singles play while teammates Davina Mendiburu and Courtney Nagle are ranked No. 37 in doubles play. Manuel Kost starts the preseason with a No. 63 ranking in singles.
Panova, a sophomore from Moscow, Russia, returns from a stunning freshman campaign when she joined the Ducks midway through the season. Panova played at No. 1 singles every match since she joined the team, finishing the season with an 8-4 record, including four wins over ranked players.
'She's only been here since March and she's already getting the recognition,' head coach Nils Schyllander said. 'To have a ranked doubles team and singles player shows that we're starting to get some respect.'
Mendiburu and Nagle combined for a 10-13 record in 2002 while playing at the No. 1 spot in Oregon's doubles lineup. Both players will be juniors this season.
Kost, a sophomore from Kuessnacht, Switzerland, finished last season with a 12-12 record. He notched wins against ranked players like Ryan Moore of USC, Alex Vlaski of Washington and Travis Parrott of Portland.
'It's good for him to be recognized as one of the top 70 players in the nation,' men's tennis head coach Chris Russell said. 'It's not where he's going to end up at the end of the season though. He'll be at a higher level.'
