Wildcats Claim First Women's Golf Title of Season at NCAA Fall Preview
Sept. 17, 2002
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-On the strength of the low team round of the day and an individual medalist performance from sophomore Miriam Kraschinski, Arizona's women's golf team won its first tournament of the 2002 fall season Tuesday at the NCAA Fall Preview held at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. The Wildcats, for the second day in a row, posted the best team round as they shot 4-over-par 292 to complete the tournament at 889 (+25).
'It's a great feeling to come away with the win,' said head coach Greg Allen, who now has won eight tournaments in his young career. 'It was a great team effort. Miriam really stepped up, but then so did the whole team. We came here believing that we could win and we battled back to do just that.'
Arizona closed the tournament three shots ahead of second-place finisher Oklahoma State, who led the tournament after both the first and second rounds. The Cowgirls shot a final-round 298 as the only team besides Arizona to break 300 in the third round. Vanderbilt, at 37-over 901, finished in third, while Duke and Auburn rounded out the top five.
Kraschinski claimed her first career victory as she finished with a 1-under-par 215 in the three round tournament. By winning the NCAA Fall Preview, she becomes the 16th Wildcat golfer to win an individual title. The native of Whitianga, New Zealand, matched her second-round score of 2-under-par 70 in Tuesday's final round. A career best, it marks only the second time the sophomore has shot par or better in her career. She eclipsed her previous career-best 54-hole score by 15 shots. As a freshman, she posted a 54-hole score of 230 after three rounds of the 2001 NCAA Championships.
'I came out here and played really solid,' Kraschinski said. 'I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens. My team played solid, as well. They really grinded it out on some of the last holes. Those are the most important holes, the finishing holes. It's just a start. We have plenty more to go, and we are going to do well.'
By claiming the team title, the University of Arizona women's golf program extended to eight its streak of consecutive years with at least one team championship. In Tuesday's final round, four of the five members of the Wildcat lineup shot its best round of the tournament. Arizona was one of only two teams to improve its score each day.
Senior All-American Laura Myerscough contributed a 1-over-par round of 73 to bring her three-day score to 225 (+9), earning her a tie for 18th place and her ninth career top-25 finish. Trailing Myerscough by only one stroke in a tie for 21st place was freshman Erica Blasberg. The former American Junior Golf Association All-American shot 2-over 74 and closed action at 226 (+10). The other half of the Wildcats' freshmen class competing this week was Whitney Welch, who shared 28th place as her final-round 75 put her at 12-over-par 228 for the tournament. Senior Anne Lee, whose opening-round was disqualified because she signed an incorrect scorecard, added a 4-over 76 to Arizona's score.
'We knew Miriam was playing great and everyone else was around par,' Allen said of his team's balanced performance. 'They worked hard. We sure will leave here with a good feeling.'
Arizona returns to action Monday when it will head to Nashville, Tenn., for the Mason Rudolph Collegiate Championship.
