Huskies Down Harvard 3-1 in Women's Soccer

Sept. 20, 2002

SEATTLE - The 21st-ranked Washington women scored on their first two shots Friday en route to a 3-1 victory over Harvard during the first round of the Husky/Nike Invitational soccer tournament in front of 1,852 fans at Husky Soccer Field.

Sophomore Nicole Martinez opened the scoring at 7:27, volleying in a 12-yard shot on a play set up by Liz Taylor's free kick. Junior Melissa Bennett netted what proved to be the game-winner at 13:03 after finding herself alone in front of the Crimson goal with only goalkeeper Katie Shields to beat. Tina Frimpong drew the defense to the right wing and broke free with a nifty move before passing to Bennett.

Shields recorded 10 saves for Harvard which was outshot 24-14 despite owning a 10-7 margin at halftime. Washington senior Hope Solo, the 2001 Pac-10 Player of the Year, had three saves.

Harvard (2-2) drew within 2-1 at 28:41 when Katie Westfall's corner kick got loose in front of the UW goal and Liza Barber poked it in during the scramble. The Huskies got an insurance goal at 62:25 when Jaime Carstensen headed in a Bennett corner kick from eight yards away.

Washington (4-2-1) meets UC Irvine (2-3) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The Anteaters lost 2-0 to No. 5 Portland which plays Harvard at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Pilots (6-2) tallied a goal in each half on the way to their sixth straight win. Lindsey Huie served a corner kick into the box that was flicked off the head of UP teammate Lauren Orlandos to Betsy Barr who headed it in from three yards out.

Sophomore Christine Sinclair scored her team-leading seventh goal on a penalty kick at 75:26 after teammate Wanda Rozwadowska was fouled inside the box. Lauren Arase posted the shutout while saving three shots. Sarah Swancutt and Chelsea McCarthy each played one half and combined for nine saves for Irvine which was outshot 26-7.
