Volleyball Defeats Oregon, 3-0

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Washington volleyball (10-1 / 2-0 Pac-10) defeated Oregon (9-4 / 0-1 Pac-10) in three games (30-19, 30-27, 30-21) this evening in the Bank of America Arena to complete a two match sweep over its Oregon foes in the opening week of Pac-10 play. The Huskies topped Oregon State last night, 3-0.
Senior Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) recorded seven of her match-high 17 kills in game one to overpower the Ducks, 30-19. The Huskies led by as many as seven points at 21-14 and 25-18 before three Oregon errors and two Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) kills put the game away.
The score remained within one point in game two between 9-8 and 24-23. Two Duck errors, however, paired with two Benjamin kills earned Washington the game, 30-27.
Oregon took the early 4-3 lead in game three but Benjamin's three straight services aces lifted Washington to the 8-4 advantage and the Huskies never looked back in route to the 30-21 win and match victory.
Tomasevic finished the match with nine kills and Alexis McDonald (Long Beach, Calif.) added seven. Setter Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) tallied 32 assists on the night and seven digs, while libero Candace Lee (Eugene, Ore.) had a team-high eight digs.
Washington's defense stifled the Duck attack as it collected six blocks including one solo and six assists by Kara Bjorklund (Olympia, Wash.).
Lindsay Close led Oregon with 11 kills, while Lindsay Murphy collected 12 digs in the losing effort.
The Huskies continue Pac-10 action September 27-28 as they travel to California to play No. 11 UCLA and No. 1 USC.
