Sept. 22, 2002
The California men's soccer team collected its third straight victory Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium, blanking the University of San Francisco, 2-0. The Golden Bears improve their record to 4-2-1 as the Dons fall to an even 3-3-0.
Cal came out immediately in the first half playing aggressively, firing quality shots at USF goalkeeper, Mark Muleady. Freshman Tyson Wahl notched his first collegiate goal in what ended up being all that the Bears needed to edge past USF. At 31:15, Wahl headed the ball into the goal off of a corner kick brought in by teammate Mike Munoz, his first assist of the season.
Munoz tallied his third goal of the season less than six minutes into the second half, assisted by freshman redshirt Garrett Terracciano. Munoz worked the ball from the 20-yard line, passed it off to Terracciano at the 6-yard line who quickly returned it to Munoz at the 4-yard line for him to blast it by USF's Muleady.
Muleady played stellar defense today for the Dons, facing 14 shots and collecting nine saves in the effort. Cal goalkeeper Josh Saunders recorded his third straight shutout for the Bears with three saves for the day.Sophomores Kyle Navarro, Noah Merl and Troy Roberts provided key defensive play in the backfield to help Saunders shutdown the Dons.
California next competes in the Stanford Invitational with play beginning on Thursday, Sept. 26 when the Bears take on No. 24 (Soccer America) Santa Clara at Santa Clara at 7:30 p.m. Day two completes the tournament, as Cal faces No. 24 (NSCAA) Tulsa at Stanford at noon.
