Volleyball Cracks Into USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll
Sept. 23, 2002
SEATTLE, Wash. -- After a sweep of Oregon State and Oregon last week, Washington volleyball (10-1 / 2-0 Pac-10) made its first appearance in the USA Today / AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll this season.
The Huskies were listed in the others receiving votes category with 15 to occupy the 33rd position overall. Washington joins fellow Pac-10 schools No. 1 USC, No. 4 Stanford, No. 12 Arizona, No. 17 UCLA and No. 18 Washington State in the poll.
Washington last opened league play 2-0 in 1997 when it started the Pac-10 season 3-0. That season, the squad finished second in conference and advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament. With the two league wins, the Huskies have posted half of their league win total from a year ago. In fact, the Huskies 10 wins are one short of equaling last year's win total of 11.
One reason for UW's success is senior outside hitter Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.). She hit .457 with 36 kills (6.00 kpg), 14 digs (2.33 dpg), five aces and three blocks while collecting 42 points in the weekend sweep of the Oregon schools.
Washington continues conference play this week with matches at USC and UCLA, September 27-28.
