Cal Places Sixth at 30th Pacific Invitational

The California men's golf team took sixth place at the 2002 Pacific Invitational on Sept. 23 and 24 at The Reserve at Spanos Park. The Golden Bears shot a final round of 282 (288+288+282=858) to ease into the sixth slot after completing the first two rounds in 11th place in the 14-team tournament.

Junior Peter Tomasulo, who shot a six-under-par 210 (71+68+71) and tied for 11th place, led Cal in its second tournament of the fall season. Junior J.R. Ruda's third round of 68 bumped him from 37th after day one to finishing tied for the 19th slot (73+72+68=213). Sophomore Jeff Hood fired a final round of 73 (71+74+73=218), tied for 38th place. Mid-Pines Intercollegiate individual medallist, Michael Wilson (73+75+71=219), and sophomore Chris Ancheta (73+74+72=219) rounded out the Cal squad tying for 43rd.

UCLA won the tournament by 16 strokes, finishing 34 under par. The Bruins' tournament score (830) was the lowest since Oregon posted a tournament record 828 in 1991 at Stockton Country Club. Alvero Velasco of Coastal Carolina was the individual medallist, firing three sub-70 rounds. Velasco sank a hole in one on the 15th hole (179 yards) of round two.

The Bears next travel to Malibu, CA to compete in the Pepperdine Intercollegiate on Oct. 7 and 8.
