No. 1 Women Of Troy Hand 18th-Ranked Cougars First Loss Of Season
Sept. 27, 2002
LOS ANGELES -- Thanks to a career-high performance by senior Lauren Killian, the No. 1-ranked USC women's volleyball team (9-0, 3-0 Pac-10) defeated Washington State, 30-18, 30-21, 30-24, on Friday night in front of 678 at USC's Lyon Center.
The Women of Troy kept their perfect record in tact as they improved to 9-0 overall, while handing the Cougars (11-1, 2-1 Pac-10) their first loss of the season. USC also put an end to the Cougars school record 32-game win streak with tonight's victory.
Killian led the team with personal-best 13 kills off of 22 attacks for a .455 hitting percentage and 15.0 total points. Middle blockers Katie Olsovsky and Emily Adams also posted double-double performances with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Olsovsky hit .588 for the night and collected three blocks, while Adams hit .529 in addition to four blocks.
USC held Washington State to a .133 attack percentage, out-hit the Cougars 59 to 37 and out-dug WSU 65 to 41. The Trojans also posted 10.0 team blocks, while the Cougars collected 3.0. WSU was led by senior hitter Adrian Hankoff who tallied 18 kills (.341) and eight digs in the sweep.
The Women of Troy wasted no time in establishing control of the match, hitting .333 while pushing WSU to a -.070 hitting percentage thanks to 11 Cougar hitting errors in the first game. USC also took advantage of its height, out-blocking WSU six to zero. With an eight-point run to cap off the win, USC took game one, 30-18.
The Trojans jumped out to a five-point lead in game two, but a service error and two hitting errors gave the Cougars some momentum. WSU managed to climbed to within one, 18-17, but a USC timeout allowed the Trojans to reorganize as they rolled to a 30-21 win.
The Cougars fought back in game three and again found themselves within one at 18-17. USC responded with four straight points and never looked back. Despite two, two-point Cougar rallies late in the game, sophomore Keao Burdine put an end to the match with a kill for a 30-24 USC win.
The Trojans return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 28, against Washington for a 7 p.m. tip at the Lyon Center.
