Volleyball Loses Hard-Fought Match To No. 17 UCLA

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Washington volleyball (10-2 / 2-1 Pac-10) lost to No. 17 UCLA (8-5 / 1-2 Pac-10) in three close games (31-29, 30-27, 30-25) this evening at the Pauley Pavilion. The Huskies and Bruins played even all night, losing no game by more than five points,

Senior Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) and sophomore Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) led Washington with 15 kills and 11 kills, respectively.

UCLA had a trio of players control their attack, including Brittany Ringel, Lauren Fendrick and Heather Cullen, each with 12 kills.

Senior setter Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.) dished 37 assists on the night for the Huskies, while the Bruins used the tandem of Krystal McFarland (25) and Haley Jorgensborg (24) to run their attack.

Tomasevic anchored the UW defense with eight digs, while Maurer and Benjamin each added six in the losing effort.

Washington continues its road trip with a 7:30 p.m. match-up against No. 1 USC tomorrow night.
