Women's Volleyball Downs Washington, 3-0
Sept. 27, 2002
LOS ANGELES - Three Bruins downed 12 kills in the match as UCLA won its home opener on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion, defeating Washington 31-29, 30-27, 30-25. Brittany Ringel, Lauren Fendrick and Heather Cullen downed 12 kills apiece, with Ringel finishing the match error-free with a .571 attack percentage.
UCLA started the match hot, sprinting to an early 6-0 lead before Washington fought back to tie the match at 16-16. Cira Wright and Fendrick were the key elements early on, as Wright had three kills and a solo block and Fendrick had two kills during that early run. Once the match score entered the 20s the outcome was still uncertain, as the teams were tied seven times between 22-22 and 29-29 before the Bruins connected on a Lauren Fendrick kill, her ninth of the game, and a block by Wright and Brynn Murphy to give UCLA the 31-29 game one victory.
It was more of the same in game two, as neither team could mount more than a three-point lead early on before the game was tied at 18-18. From there, the Bruins slowly pulled away to a 27-24 lead before the Huskies closed to within a point at 27-26, but UCLA was able to come away with the 30-27 win to go to the locker rooms up 2-0.
In game three, the Huskies held leads as large as four points before the Bruins put together a four-point run to tie the game at 22-22. UCLA then capitalized on a UW service error to start a three-point run, giving the Bruins their first lead of the game. UCLA was able to close it out from there to earn the 30-25 game three win in just over 90 minutes of play.
Brittany Ringel hit .571 in the match, connecting for 12 kills on 21 swings without an attack error. Teammates Lauren Fendrick and Heather Cullen also contributed 12 kills apiece, while sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman led all players with 10 digs, while Wright led the Bruins on the blocks with one solo and four block assists for the match.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday night with a 7 pm start against No. 18 Washington State. The match will be broadcast live on the internet at www.uclabruins.com.
