Sept. 28, 2002

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Duck men's and women's cross country teams faced their first major tests of the season Saturday at the annual Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota, and held on the Les Bolstad Golf Course.

The 10th-ranked University of Oregon men's cross country team won their first ever Roy Griak Invitational team title, while the women's squad showed vast improvement from a year ago, placing eighth in the 22-team field. The Duck men scored 96 points, edging out No. 12 Eastern Michigan by nine points, and also defeating fourth ranked Wisconsin handily. The Duck women scored 229 points, while defeating two teams ranked ahead of them in the most recent polls, host Minnesota, and Pac-10 foe Arizona.

Michigan State won the women's team title with 72 points, and were led by individual champion Michelle Carson (6,000 meters, 20:41.6). In the men's individual race, BYU sophomore Kip Kangogo upset defending NCAA individual champion Boaz Cheboiywo of Eastern Michigan, covering the 8-kilometer course in 23 minutes, 38.9 seconds.

The Duck men's winning effort was led by sophomore Ryan Andrus, who finished eigth overall (24:41.3). Other Duck finishers included junior Noel Paulson (88th, 25:30.4) and redshirt frosh Will Viviani (128th, 25:55.4).

The Duck women were led once again by senior Carrie Zografos, who finished as the top Oregon finisher in four of five races last year. The school record holder in the Steeplechase moved up from 24th midway through the race to finish 18th, covering 6,000 meters in 21:40.8. The second Oregon finisher was junior Magdalena Sandoval (36th, 22:02.0), followed by junior Laura Harmon (45th, 22:11.7), an 11-time scoring veteran, junior Eri Macdonald (61st, 22:28.9), true freshman Nicole Feest (83rd, 22:53.7), senior Erinn Gulbrandsen (113th, 23:18.9), and junior Alicia Snyder-Carlson (132nd, 23:37.8).

'I thought we made a major stride in this meet,' said Oregon women's head coach Tom Heinonen, 'We clearly showed were a much better team than last year.'

Looking ahead, the Duck women compete next weekend at the Willamette Invitational at Bush Park in Salem, while the men have three weeks off before traveling to Terre Haute, Indiana for the Pre-NCAA Invitational, ran on the LaVern Gibson Golf Course, the site of this year's NCAA Championships.
