Women Win Two Races, Men Take 4000 Meters At 2002 Stanford Invitational

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 3 Stanford women's team won a pair of races and the top-ranked men's squad captured the 4000 meter team title at the 2002 Stanford Invitational held on Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course. The Cardinal also had a pair of individual winners with Sara Bei winning the 6000 meter women's race in 20:02 and Ryan Hall taking the men's 4000 meters with a time of 11:49. The Stanford men finished third in the men's 8000 meter team competition as the Cardinal split its squad and did not compete with any of members of its freshmen class. New Mexico won the men's 8000 meter team competition with 61 points.
'It was good to get both wins on the women's side and there were lots of positive aspects from our men's team,' said Stanford director of cross country/track and field Vin Lananna. 'I'm looking forward to competing in next Friday's Notre Dame Invitational.'
The other two collegiate individual winners were Ian Dobson running unattached in the men's 8000 meters (23:27) and Emile Mondo of Simon Fraser capturing the women's 4000 meters (13:32). Lauren Jespersen (Klamath Union) highlighted the 14 prep races by setting a new high school course record for 5000 meters. Jespersen edged out Tim Nelson (Liberty Christian) for the title and the course record as both runners finished with a time of 14:54 in the Boys Varsity Division I race. Tyler Graff (Unattached) won the men's 8000 meter non-scored open event with a time of 24:36, while Cassia Roth (Silver State Striders) won the women's 5000 meter non-scored open race in 18:31.
The Stanford women won the 6000 meter race with 50 points. Bei was joined in the top 10 by Alicia Craig (2nd, 20:09) and Erin Sullivan (10th, 21:19). Others scoring for the Cardinal included Anita Siraki (12th, 21:30) and Kristin Cohoon (30th, 22:10).
In the 4000 meter women's competition, Stanford scored 75 points. Lauren Fleshman was Stanford's top individual finisher with a second place showing in a time of 13:48. Malindi Elmore (4th, 13:56), Katie Hotchkiss (15th, 14:54), Yfa Kretzschmar (22nd, 15:10) and Rachel Urbina (43rd, 15:48) finished Stanford's scoring.
The Stanford men had 21 points in the squad's 4000 meter team victory. Hall was joined by Seth Hejny (2nd, 12:13), Justin Romaniuk (6th, 12:23), Steve Loughlin (7th, 12:24) and Andy Powell (8th, 12:24) in Stanford's scoring effort. Evan Fox (10th, 12:30) also had a top 10 showing.
Stanford scored 84 points for its third-place showing in the men's 8000 meters. Adam Tenforde was the top Cardinal runner with an eighth place finish in 24:02. Neil Davis (9th, 24:07), Isaac Hawkins (23rd, 24:26), Andrew Hill (43rd, 24:50) and Sean Knapp (45th, 24:51) finished Stanford's scoring.
Stanford will next be in action at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, October 4.
