UConn Wins Nike Husky Classic With 2-0 Victory Over UW
Sept. 29, 2002
SEATTLE, Wash. - Led by a pair of goals from senior forward Damani Ralph, ninth-ranked UConn defeated the Washington men's soccer team 2-0 to win the 14th Annual Nike Husky Classic at Husky Soccer Field Sunday afternoon.
Suffering its first shutout this season, Washington's overall record falls to 3-3-2, while UConn improves to 6-2. UConn and UW were both 1-0 in the Nike Husky Classic coming into today's match. UW defeated Marquette 3-2 and UConn slid past No. 11 Portland 2-1, Friday.
Ralph gave UConn a 1-0 advantage in the 28th minute of the game. After receiving the ball on a throw-in from Andrew McLeod, Ralph juggled, turned and blasted the shot from the right side of the box.
Just a minute into the second-half, UW came close to evening the score at 1-1, when sophomore Brett Wiesner found the open net only to have his goal called back following an offsides call.
Ralph sealed the victory for UConn in the 73rd-minute with his second goal of the match and seventh of the season, a shot from 20-yards out assisted by Michael Mordocco.
UW freshman goalkeeper Chris Eylander allowed both goals but made three saves on UConn's 18 shot-attack. Washington's offensive attack was led by freshman Mike Chabala and junior Seth Marsh with two shots each. The Huskies as a team tallied seven shots.
Individual tournament honors went to Washington junior Sean Giudice for Outstanding Offensive Player. Giudice scored two goals in UW's 3-2 win over Marquette Friday. UConn's Shavar Thomas was voted the tournament's Outstanding Defensive Player.
In the morning game, No. 11 Portland (7-3-0), last year's Nike Husky Classic champion, defeated Marquette (2-5-0) 3-0. Eric Cronkite, Paul Robinson and Nate Jaqua scored the Pilots' goals, while Cronkite and Jaqua also added one assist each.
Up next for Washington will be a trip to Portland to face the Pilots for its last non-conference match of the season before the beginning of Pac-10 play. The battle of Northwest rivals takes place Sunday, Oct. 6, at Merlo Field at 2:15 p.m.
