The women's tennis team prepares for the All-American Championships in Los Angeles,Calif., on Oct. 6-13.
The Wildcat women's tennis team competed in the Rice Tennis Classic last weekend in Humble, Texas.The Cats played all members of the team, junior Debbie Larocque, sophomores Dianne Hollands, Maja Mlakar,Kelly Perry, and Marie-Pier Pouliot, and freshman Kristy Randono. No. 85-ranked Hollands won the crown in top-flightsingles competition,upsetting No. 13-ranked Mlakar by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Larocque won the consolation bracketby defeating Long Beach State's Lindsey Marvel, 6-2, 6-2.
In the second flight of singles play, Kelly Perry defeated LBSU's Claudia Argumedo, 6-4, 6-4, to claim fifth place,while Pouliot fell to Karen Chao of Lee College, 2-6, 6-4,6-1. In the third flight of singles, Kristy Randono defeatedLee College's Christina Mancheno, 6-0, 6-2, to claim fifth place. In doubles,Arizona's fourth-ranked duo of Mlakarand Larocque was upset by Minnesota's Valerie Vladea and Michaela Havelkova, 8-6. Hollands and Pouliot defeatedNischela Reddy and Jeanette Cluskey of Minnesota, 8-3,to claim third place. Perry and Randono took third place inthe consolation bracket by downing Minnesota's Cici Anderson and Kandis Batiste, 8-0.

Off To a Good Start
Freshman Kristy Randono had a successful weekend at the Rice Invitational. She defeated her opponents inthe first, second, third, and final rounds of singles play to capture fifth place in the third flight. In doubles play,partnered with fellow UA newcomer Kelly Perry, Randono claimed third place in the consolation bracket.
