STANFORD successfully defended its Pac-10 title behind the strength of its distance runners, picking up 77 of its 151 points in the 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meter races. The OREGON Ducks finished second with 125 points - their best showing since a second-place finish in 1996.

The Cardinal was also the Pac-10's top team at the NCAA Championships, finishing in eighth place with 28 points. Stanford's Donald Sage was the lone Pac-10 athlete to earn a national title as he broke the tape first in the 1500 meters (3:42.65). USC finished tied for 11th with 21 points.

WASHINGTON STATE's Anson Henry was named the Pac-10's Athlete of the Year. Henry won both the 100 meters (10.29) and 200 meters (20.52) at the Pac-10 Championships. During the season, he established a Cougar school record with a time of 10.17 in the 100 meters.

USC sophomore Julien Kapek earned Newcomer of the Year honors. He won the triple jump (16.84m/55-3) at the Pac-10 Championships, then placed third (16.58m/54-4.75) at the NCAA Championships. His season-best mark of 55-8.50 set a USC school record, and it was the third best mark all-time in the Pac-10.

Oregon's Martin Smith was named the Pac-10 Track and Field Coach of the Year - his first Pac-10 honor. Under Smith's tutelage, nine Oregon athletes finished either first or second at the Pac-10 Championships.
