Oct. 3, 2002
SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Washington volleyball team fell to No. 24 Arizona State, 3-2 this evening at the Bank of America Arena. The loss drops the Huskies to 10-4 overall (2-3 Pac-10) and improves the Sun Devils to 7-2 (3-1 Pac-10).
ASU took games one and two and appeared to be on its way to an easy three game sweep as the Sun Devils led the Huskies in nearly every statistical category. Juliana Escobar did the majority of the damage with 11 of her match-high 20 kills.
Washington found momentum in game three, however, battling back from a 17-12 deficit to tie the game at 20-20 and again at 23-23. The Huskies then scored the next three points on a ASU attack error and back-to-back kills by freshman Darla Myhre (Victoria, British Columbia) to take the 26-23 lead. UW pushed its lead to four at 28-24 and 29-25 before sophomore Alexis McDonald (Long Beach, Calif.) closed out the game with one of her career-high 15 kills.
Game four was evenly played as the score knotted 20 times through 24-24. Sophomore Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) posted three kills in the final six points to give Washington the victory and force game five.
In game five, ASU jumped out to the 12-8 lead on five kills by Julia Leddy. The Huskies rallied to pull within one at 14-13 but Escobar recorded two kills to lift the Sun Devils to victory.
Washington has little time to regroup as it hosts No. 17 Arizona tomorrow, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
