Men's Golf Heads to Pepperdine

Oct. 4, 2002

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon men's golf team heads to Somis, Calif., for the 2002 Club Grove Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday at the 6,900-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club. Teams will play 36 holes Monday and a final 18 Tuesday.

The Ducks are coming off a seventh place finish in the season-opening Windon Memorial Classic last week, and have a string of seven straight regular season top 10 finishes heading into the Club Grove Intercollegiate.

For the second straight week, a local product will make his Oregon debut. Last week, it was North Bend's Kyle Johnson, a redshirt freshman who tied for 17th and will play No. 3 for the Ducks at Saticoy. This week, fellow redshirt freshman Justin St. Clair, a Springfield, Ore., native and 2001 graduate of Thurston High School, debuts at No. 5 for Oregon.

'This is our second event of the year,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. 'And we've changed our lineup a little bit again to get a look a couple of the younger guys and I think that's typical of what you will see from us throughout the fall.'

'Kyle Johnson is off to a tremendous start, so we'll see if he can keep that going,' said Nosler. 'I think this golf course that we will be playing could be an advantage for Justin, because it's not real long and rewards players who tend to keep the ball in the fairway, and that's one of his strengths.'

The remainder of the Ducks' five-man contingent will be comprised of seniors Chris Carnahan and John Ellis at the top two spots, respectively, and redshirt junior Mike Sica at No. 4. This will be Sica's first action of the season.

At last year's Club Grove tournament, the Ducks tied for fifth with California and Alabama-Birmingham as Ellis tied for seventh individually and Carnahan tied for ninth.

The 12-team field for the 2002 Club Grove Intercollegiate includes Brigham Young, California, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Colorado State, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, host and defending champion Pepperdine, Southern Methodist, Stanford and UCLA.
