Sun Devil Volleyball Swept By No. 19 Washington State

PULLMAN, Wash. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Washington State senior outsidehitter Adrian Hankoff had 15 kills as the 19th-ranked Cougars swept thevisiting No. 24 Arizona State Sun Devils 3-0 in Pac-10 Volleyball actionFriday night in Bohler Gym. Game scores were 30-17, 30-19, 30-23 in favorof the Cougars.

The loss ended ASU's three-match winning streak, dropping the Sun Devils to7-3 overall and 3-2 in Pac-10 play. The Devils are now 3-2 against rankedopponents this year. After improving to 4-0 in five-game matches with a 3-2victory over Washington last night, the Devils dropped to 2-2 in three-gamematches.

Washington State improved to 12-2 overall and with the sweep of the tworanked Arizona schools are now 4-2 in conference play. ASU still leads theall-time series against the Cougars 18-16, but WSU has now won threestraight vs. the Sun Devils.

Senior middle blocker Julia Leddy (Mesa, Ariz.) led the Sun Devils with 12kills and hit .478 in the match. Junior outside hitter Juliana Escobar(Sobradinho DF, Brazil) was limited to only nine kills, the second timethis season she has had less then 10 kills. Junior setter Cheryl Anglin(Queen Creek, Ariz.) led the Devils with 10 digs.

WSU senior outside hitter LaToya Harris (Portland, Ore.) became the thirdCougar to join the 1,000-kill, 1,000-dig club for a career. Harris, who wasbenched in WSU's 3-2 win over Arizona Thursday night, recorded nine killsvs. the Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils suffered their worst two losses of the year in games one andtwo, falling 30-17 and 30-19 respectively. Tough Cougar serving and a .143ASU hitting percentage put the Devils down 1-0. Escobar led the Sun Devilswith five kills in game one. The Cougars continued their torrid hittingwith a .382 mark in game two to back up their .389 in game one. The Cougssealed the victory with a 30-23 win in game three.

ASU returns to action next weekend with home matches against No. 4 Stanford(Oct. 10; 7 p.m.) and California (Oct. 11; 7 p.m.). Both matches will beplayed at Wells Fargo Arena with Thursday's match against the nationallyranked Cardinal to air as the Pac-10/Fox Sports Net Match of the Week.
