Cal Men Tie for Ninth, Women 12th at Indiana State Invitational

TERRA HAUTE, Ind. - The California men's cross country team tied Army for ninth with 250 points Saturday morning at the Indiana State Invitational. The Cal women placed 12th with 355 points on the same LaVern Gibson Course at Wabash Valley Sports Center.
Some of the top teams in the nation competed in today's invitational as Indiana State also serves as host of the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championships in November.
No. 17 Colorado State claimed the men's title with 58 points, while No. 20 Indiana was second with 83 and No. 25 Butler and Nebraska were third with 118. No. 7 Arkansas also held off a tough field to claim the women's title with 45 points, ahead of Michigan (74) and Villanova (75).
Junior Carlos Carballo had his second-straight Top 25 finish against nationally-ranked competition to lead Cal in back-to-back weeks. The Cathedral City, Calif., product placed 22nd by clocking 25:11.7 on the 8000m course. Senior Martin Conrad also posted a 25th-place showing in 25:11.7.
Rounding out the Bear finishers were freshmen Giliat Ghebray in 58th (25:43.6), Kevin Davis in 71st (26:03.0), Eric Roberts in 87th (26:21.1), junior Jon Balzer in 88th (25:21.4) and seniors John Burke in 92nd (26:31.8) and Craig Lee in 119th (27:05.5).
Butler's Martin Fedmowksi won the race in 24:26.8, and Alabama's Peter Kiprono was second in 24:35.5.
Freshman Bridget Duffy was Cal's top runner for the third competition this season. She finished 56th by covering the 6000m course in 22:51.6. Sophomore Abby Parker was the Bears' next fastest runner in 80th in 23:23.9.
Other Cal results included redshirt freshman Maja Ruznic placing 87th in 23:28.1, sophomore Lindsey Maclise taking 89th in 23:30.8, Lache Bailey in 95th (23:41.2) and Sophia Marquez in 128th (24:30.0).
Arkansas posted three of the top four women's finishes overall with Andreina Byrd grabbing top honors in 20.50.1.
