Cal Has Strong Showing at San Francisco Invite

SAN FRANCISCO - Freshman Abadir Barre took fifth (26:14.00) place to lead California at the San Francisco State Invitational Sunday morning at Golden Gate Park.

Cal junior Girmay Guangul, who may redshirt the 2002 season, won the 8000m race as an unattached athlete in a time of 25:27.40. Fresno State's Fernando Cabada crossed the finish line in second with a time of 25:36.90, while his teammate Roosevelt Cook placed third in 25:44.50.

Four other Golden Bears also finished in the Top 25 - sophomore Jeff Squires grabbed 21st (27:08.50), junior Adam Shaffer was 22nd (27:27.40) and freshman Justin Laue was 24th (27:42.20).

In the women's 6000m race, freshman Mary Faia paced Cal with a 36th-place showing in 24:53.00. Other finishers included junior Leah Atwood in 38th (24:57.00), sophomore Chloe Jarvis was 48th (26:06.00), freshman Marisa Lindsey was 56th (27:34.00) and sophomore Nicole Smith was 59th (28:09.00).

Fresno State's Kara June claimed top honors in 21:46.00, followed by two unattached athletes, Alle Porter (21:58.00) and Leti Arroyo (22:43.00).
