Oct. 7, 2002
Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State University men's and women's basketball teams will host 'Beaver Dam Jam' Fri., Oct. 11. The event will be held at 8 p.m. in Gill Coliseum -- admission is free. Division I basketball programs may officially begin practice Sat., Oct. 12.
Beaver Dam Jam is an opportunity for OSU students to meet members of the men's and women's basketball programs. The men's program features first-year head coach Jay John, formerly a four-year assistant coach at the University of Arizona, and eighth-year women's head coach Judy Spoelstra.
In addition, numerous prizes will be awarded during the evening, including 200 student Civil War football tickets. Tickets also will be given away for the Oct. 16 NBA exhibition game at Gill Coliseum between the Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle SuperSonics, and for the DL Hughley concert at Gill Oct. 25.
'Student involvement from the OSU community is very important to the men's program,' John said. 'I have witnessed Gill Coliseum be an intimidating place for opponents, and it's because of the awesome student section. With the students help, we can create a frenzied atmosphere that will help this team be successful.'
Mark Mac, an on-air personality at Portland's Party Station Jammin 95.5, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. The station's 'Street Team' will also be in attendance.
'This is always an exciting time of the year, and even more so this season due to this event,' Spoelstra said. 'We have some terrific student-athletes in the program and I'm anxious for OSU students to meet them. This is a new era for this program, and now more than ever we need student involvement to make Gill Coliseum truly a home court advantage.'
Students in attendance will have the opportunity to become a member of the official sixth man club - the Beaver Dam. The Beaver Dam includes an official T-Shirt, membership card, mid-court seats at all men's and women's basketball games, and discounts at the Chippery Restaurant in Corvallis. Membership fee is $10, with registration beginning Oct. 11. Beaver Dam individuals from the 2001-2002 season may renew their membership from 2-5 p.m. beginning Mon., Oct. 7 in room 100 at Gill Coliseum. A Beaver Dam member renewing their membership will receive a student Civil War football ticket.
