BEAR NOTES: The Cal volleyball team (11-3, 2-3) has a big weekend ahead as it collides with a pair of nationally ranked opponents on the road, No. 22 ranked Arizona State (7-3, 3-2) and No. 20 ranked Arizona (7-6, 2-3). Last weekend the Bears lost two matches at Haas Pavilion, but represented themselves well against No. 13 UCLA and No. 1 USC. Cal fell to the Bruins, 3-1, yet took the top-ranked Trojans to the wire before losing, 3-2. It was the first time Cal had won a game against USC since 1998 and the first time the Bears had won two games against the Trojans since a 3-2 loss in 1993. Sophomore Mia Jerkov led the Bears with a career-high 32 kills and an impressive .353 hitting percentage against USC. Freshman Jenna Brown also excelled against the Trojans, collecting a career-high 21 kills and a team-high 19 digs, while junior setter Caity Noonan tallied 68 assists. The Bears out-hit the Trojans, .306-.295. Cal captured three straight tournaments - the Golden Bear Invitational, the UNLV Gameworks Classic and the SMU DoubleTree Invitational - to begin the 2002 season. Cal also won a school-record 27 straight games and tied a school-record (with the 1989 team, the last time Cal made NCAA postseason) by opening the year with nine straight match victories. The Bears have been led by three-time tournament MVP Jerkov, who has led Cal in kills in every match this season. The Bears have received votes in both AVCA and Volleyball Magazine Top 25 polls and have already surpassed last year's victory total (10-18).
JERKOV - ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE: Mia Jerkov (pronounced YAIR-cove), a 6-3 sophomore outside hitter from Split, Croatia, was named tournament MVP for all three tournaments Cal entered this season. Jerkov was also named the Sept. 9 Pac-10 Player of the Week. It was her first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and the Bears' 14th Player of the Week honor all-time. On the season, Jerkov has a team-leading 275 kills, 156 digs and 26 service aces. She is averaging a team-best 5.73 kills, 3.25 digs and 0.54 service aces per game. Jerkov also leads the Pac-10 in both kills (275) and points (316.0, combining kills, service aces and blocks). She is in contention to be Cal's first All-America volleyball player since Sylvie Monnet earned the honor in 1983.
OTHER BEAR NOTABLES: Senior outside hitter Leah Young joined Jerkov as a member of the all-tournament teams for the Golden Bear, UNLV Gameworks and SMU DoubleTree Invitationals. Young, the Bears' lone senior, has a .282 hitting percentage, 13 service aces and 37 total blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Camille Leffall has been a member of the Gameworks Classic and the Golden Bear Invitational all-tournament teams as well, and is leading Cal with a .414 hitting percentage. Last season Leffall was named to the 2001 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team and established a school record with a .381 hitting percentage (163 kills, 44 errors, 312 attempts). Junior setter Caity Noonan returned to action after sitting out most of last year after tearing the ACL in her left knee Sept. 7, 2001. Noonan has been solid as the Bears setter, tallying 629 assists and was selected all-tournament at the SMU DoubleTree Invitational. She now has 1,464 career assists, moving up to fourth on the Cal all-time list.
HEAD COACH RICH FELLER: Rich Feller (47-51 at Cal, career 346-218, .613) is in his fourth season as the head coach of Cal's women's volleyball program. Feller came to the Bears after a stint as an assistant coach on the USA National Team and 14 years as head coach at Colorado State (1983-96) where he led the Rams to eight NCAA Tournament appearances and 12 Top 25 national rankings. Feller earned his 300th career victory when the Bears defeated the University of Denver, 3-1, Sept. 4, 1999.
CAL VS. THE OPPONENTS: The Bears have a 10-26 all-time record against No. 22 Arizona State (7-3, 3-2), last falling to the Sun Devils 3-2, Nov. 25, 2001 in Berkeley. Cal has a 6-28 all-time record against No. 20 ranked Arizona (7-6, 2-3), last losing to the Wildcats, 3-0, Nov. 16, 2001 in Tucson. The Bears have lost 12 straight matches to Arizona, last defeating the Wildcats, 3-0, Oct. 27, 1995 in Tucson.
