Freshman Leads Ducks to Ninth After First Round in Tacoma
Oct. 7, 2002
TACOMA, Wash. - Freshman Therese Wenslow shot a 2-under 71 to lead Oregon to ninth place after the first round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, played Monday at the 6,102-yard, par-73 Tacoma Country Club.
'If we could have counted another score in the 70s, we would have been in real good shape,' said Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard. 'The competition in the tournament is definitely greater than in our opener, but I think our team can realistically see themselves competing with this field.'
Wenslow, the Swede who set a UO freshman record by carding a 69 at the Shanico Invitational two weeks ago, was tied for second with Oregon State's Leah Whiting and Pepperdine's Katherine Hull. USC's Becky Lucidi took the first round lead with a career day, holing eight birdies to finish at 8-under 65.
'Therese played a steady round of golf,' said Rouillard. 'She just played super and is on the verge of some really terrific accomplishments.'
As a team, Oregon was ninth at 312, 20 strokes behind first day leaders USC's 292. Washington was second at 296, followed by California at 299, and Brigham Young and Pepperdine at 300.
Other Oregon golfers in the top 50 included freshman Erin Andrews and sophomore Jess Carlyon tied for 33rd at 78, and sophomore Johnna Nealy, a Grants Pass, Ore., native, tied for 36th at 79. 'This is a beautiful, strategic golf course,' said Rouillard. 'If you don't hit your drive to the right spot, you will not have a clear shot to the green. It's a course where you are rewarded for playing smart and we have two rounds to go out and show what we've learned.'
