Men's Golf Fourth at Pepperdine

Oct. 7, 2002

SOMIS, Calif. - Oregon seniors John Ellis and Chris Carnahan each shot 2-under 140 and were one stroke out of the lead at the Club Grove Intercollegiate, played Monday at the 6,883-yard, par-72 Saticoy Country Club.

Carnahan, from Albany, Ore., had rounds of 72-70, while Ellis, from San Jose, Calif., reversed those numbers at 70-72 to help the Ducks stand fourth at 585 after the first day of play. Oregon trails second round leader Pepperdine by nine strokes. The Waves had a 576 to lead UC Irvine by five strokes and UCLA by eight.

'Chris and John had a real nice showing,' said Oregon head coach Steve Nosler. 'It is going to be exciting to have both of them competing for the individual title tomorrow, and they're both capable of winning it.'

Jeff Coburn of UC Irvine and Chris Elliott of Pepperdine shared the first day lead at 3-under 141.

Oregon's Mike Sica, a junior from San Francisco, Calif., was tied for 20th at 149. A pair of local freshmen carded solid rounds for the Ducks in the morning, but struggled to close in the afternoon. North Bend's Kyle Johnson opened with a 1-over 73, but dropped to a 79 in the second round to stand tied for 38th at 152. Springfield's Justin St. Clair had a 74 in the morning, but recorded a 79 in the afternoon to stand tied for 42nd at 153.

'We played O.K,' said Nosler. 'We had trouble getting a fourth score in the afternoon, but the freshmen did a nice job in the morning. I'd like to be above UCLA and Irvine, but we're still in position for a very high finish, and it's not unrealistic to expect that we could catch Pepperdine.'

The final round begins at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.
