Stanford Men In Ninth After Second Round At Club Glove Intercollegiate
Oct. 7, 2002
Somis, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf team carded rounds of 297 and 301 on the first day of action at the Club Glove Intercollegiate to sit in ninth place overall on the leaderboard. Rounding out the top five are host-Pepperdine (576), UC-Irvine (581), UCLA (584), Oregon (585) and New Mexico (589).
The two-day, 54-hole tournament is being contested at the Saticoy Country Club in Somis.
Individually for the Cardinal, senior Jim Seki is tied for third after firing a two-under par 142 (70-72) on the day. Fellow senior Ron Won is tied for 11th at a one-over par 145. Stanford's Blake Mastalir is tied for 49th with a 155 (78-77) while teammate Kevin Blue is tied for 51st one stroke back at 156 (77-79). Pat Phillips is 62nd with a 162 after two rounds (80-82).
'I am very disappointed in our play,' said head coach Jeff Mitchell. 'After a good start in Chicago, to come out and not stay focused and composed is a upsetting. With one round to play, we will have to come out with fire in our eyes to finish well. Jim Seki and Ron Won continue toplay great golf. But, it takes five to compete at this level.'
Pepperdine's Chris Elliott and UC-Irvine's Jeff Coburn are tied for the top spot on the leaderboard at a three-under par 141. Five players are tied for third.
A total of 18 golfers in the 62-player field shot even-par or better in the first round today.
The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m.
