UCLA To Compete Saturday At Triton Classic Cross Country Invitational
Oct. 7, 2002
Eric Peterson's UCLA women and men's cross country teams will compete Saturday (Oct. 12) at the Triton Classic Cross Country Invitational, hosted by UC San Diego.
The competition course is located on the athletic fields at UCSD in La Jolla (the start and finish area is a grass athletic field located adjacent to the track and field stadium). The men's 8000m race will start at 8:30 a.m. and the women's 6000m event begins at 9:30 a.m.
Competing for the UCLA men at UCSD will be - senior Phil Young, sophomores, Ben Aragon (Santee/West Hills HS), Erik Emilsson (Bjarred, Sweden), Puneet Mahan (Norwalk HS), Bryan Bauerle (Lakeside/West Hills HS), Nick Thornton (Vista/Rancho Buena Vista HS), Reggie Oronoz (Pasadena/Loyola HS) and Lucas Crowley (San Jose/Arch Bishop Mitty HS), along with freshmen, Martell Munguia (Sacramento/Woodcreek HS), Nick De Felice (Sacramento/Jesuit HS), Nico Cueva (Escondido HS). Not running for the Bruin men will be sophomore standout Jon Rankin, whose workouts have been hindered because of minor tendinitis in his right calf.
'The men's team looks to rebound from a disappointing seventh-place finish at the Stanford Invitational two weeks ago,' said Peterson, in his third season coaching both the UCLA men and women's teams. 'Our team has been affected by an early season virus that has hit a number of athletes. We are on the mend and looking forward to an opportunity to redeem ourselves.'We have a number of runners on the team from the San Diego area and I know that they are very much looking forward to the opportunity to compete in front of family and friends,' he said. 'Our front three runners (Rankin, Aragon and Emilsson) are very capable of leading this team into the postseason. We are looking for a stronger total team effort this weekend.'
The Bruins did not compete last weekend (Oct. 5). On Sept. 28, the Bruin women placed third at the prestigious Stanford Invite, led by Barrientos' seventh-place finish over the 6000m course. The UCLA men were seventh in team scoring.
After the Oct. 19 NCAA Preview meet in Terre Haute, UCLA will run on Oct. 25 at the CS Fullerton Invitational, preparing for the upcoming Pac-10 Championship on Saturday, Nov. 2. The 2002 Pac-10 Cross Country Championship is hosted by UCLA at the Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.
On Nov. 16, Stanford will host the NCAA West Region Qualifying meet and on Nov. 25, Indiana State will host the NCAA Championships. The UCLA women are looking to qualify for the NCAA meet for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
