Whiting Paces Beavers In Opening Round Of Ihlanfeldt Invitational

Leah Whiting led the Oregon State women's golf team with a 2-under-par 71 to tie for second after the opening round of Washington's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Monday at the par-73 Tacoma Golf and Country Club.
As a team, the Beavers are in sixth place in the 11-team field with a score of 9-over 301, nine shots back of leader and 16th- ranked USC. Only five shots separate OSU from No. 9 Washington and second place. Pepperdine, ranked 10th, and BYU hold a one-shot lead over OSU in a tie for fourth.
Whiting, a freshman from Hilo, Haw., shot 34-37 to open the tournament, and is joined in the top 10 by teammate Stacie Ferguson, who signed for an even-par 73 and is tied for seventh. Ferguson's round included a 33 on the front nine.
Whiting, along with Oregon's Therese Wenslow and Pepperdine's Katherine Hull, is six shots behind USC's Becky Lucidi, who carded a 65 to match the tournament record.Both Ferguson and Whiting have top-10 finishes this year with their ties for third and fifth, respectively, at the OSU Shanico Invitational.
The tournament continues with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday and wraps up with an 8 a.m. shotgun Wednesday.
