Bruins Continue Strong Presence with USA Softball

Nine current or former UCLA softball players are among the current player pool for USA Softball. Freshman catcher Emily Zaplatosch has been named as one of 17 players chosen to represent the USA at the First Pan American Junior Women's Softball Championship in December, while three current Bruins (Keira Goerl, Tairia Mims and Natasha Watley) and five former Bruins are among the 22 athletes selected for USA Softball's National Training Team.
The 22-member National Training Team includes the following current or former UCLA athletes: Courtney Dale, Lisa Fernandez, Amanda Freed, Keira Goerl, Lyndsey Klein, Tairia Mims, Stacey Nuveman and Natasha Watley. The group will train together in November and January at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA, and earn an automatic invitation back to the Pan Am Tryout camp in June 2003.
Zaplatosch has been chosen to play with the 2002 Junior Women's National Team, which will represent the USA at the first Pan American Junior Women's Softball Championship, December 13-21, in Sonora, Republic of Mexico. These players were selected after a three day tryout camp held October 3-2 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA.
The USA Junior Women's National Team will be competing for a spot in the 2003 ISF Junior Women's World Championship. The top five teams from this championship will earn a berth into the championship being held in Nanjing, Chiina, in 2003. The Junior Women's National Team will train together December 7-12 prior to leaving for Sonora.
