Ducks Pick up Wins in First Day of Qualifying Play

Oct. 8, 2002

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Sophomore Manuel Kost, the No. 63-ranked player in the preseason rankings, began his season with a first-round victory in qualifying singles play at the Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships. Kost defeated Ante Matijevic of Texas A&M, 6-4, 6-4, and will play Ivor Lovrak of Baylor Wednesday at 9 a.m.

In doubles play, Sven Swinnen and Oded Teig knocked off Colorado's team of Justin Hunter and Bucky Mink in a tight match, 9-7. They advance to play Butler's Brandon and Kevin Gill Wednesday at noon.

'It was a good day for the Ducks,' head coach Chris Russell said.

Swinnen and Teig had match experience from this season heading into the doubles match, as both participated in pre-qualifying singles action over the weekend. On the other hand, Kost was playing in his first match of the season.

'It's great to get that first match under your belt to get rid of the jitters,' Russell said.
