Kowalczyk Advances in All-American Tennis Championships

Berkeley, Calif. - Cal senior Robert Kowalczyk emerged victorious today in the first qualifying round of the 2002 ITA All-American Men's Championships, currently being held at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, TN. With its 256-player prequalifying rounds, the All-American Championships hail as the largest collegiate tournament in the country.
Kowalczyk took the round of 64 match against Bryan Fisher of LSU in two straight sets, 6-3; 6-4 in this morning's action. The senior's next opponent will be Nic Boeker of Georgia in the round of 32, taking place tomorrow morning, Oct. 9 at 9:00 a.m. (EST). If Kowalczyk wins that match, he will join teammates No. 71 Balazs Veress and No. 82 Conor Niland in the main draw taking place Oct. 10-13.
On the doubles front, Veress and Kowalczyk will team together as the sixth-seeded pair in the main doubles draw, also taking place Oct. 10-13.
