Men's Tennis Wins Two Titles at the Northern Arizona Invitational

Last Time Out: In split squad action, the Wildcats sent three men to the ITA All-American in Chattanooga, Tenn., and three men to the Northern Arizona Invitational in Sedona, Ariz. Competing in the ITA All-American were the top 300 players from around the country.

ITA All-American: This year's tournament was held at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., for the first time in the tournament's history. The ITA All-American is one of three national championship tournaments for collegiate tennis in 2002-2003. The tournament, which includes pre-qualifying and qualifying rounds, has been played since 1976. Arizona sent three men to the tournament, Whi Kim, Tom Lloyd and Paul Warkentin. During the weekend, the Wildcats finished 2-2. Senior Tom Lloyd lost his opening match to Karim Alayli in two close sets 7-5, 6-4. Sophomore Paul Warkentin won his opening match over Zach Malmgren 6-0, 6-4. In the second round, Warkentin beat David O'Conner in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, and fell to Sven Swinnen in the third round 6-4, 6-3, to finish the pre-qualifying rounds for the Wildcats. Whi Kim is slotted to complete Tuesday Oct. 8 in qualifying rounds.

Northern Arizona Invitational: In addition to the national tournament, the Wildcats traveled Carl Hagman, Colin O'Grady and Tim Mullane to the Northern Arizona Invitational in Sedona, Ariz. The tournament was held at Sedona Racquet Club. Competing against Arizona were players from Arizona State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, and host school Northern Arizona. During weekends play junior Carl Hagman went 4-0 in singles play including a win over Ryan McBride of Arizona State in the semifinal round 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. Hagman won the singles championship by default over Divan Coetzee of New Mexico. In round one, freshman Tim Mullane recorded his first career win over Jasmin Hodzic of New Mexico 6-0, 6-3. Mullane went on to finish the weekend 3-2, losing his final match to his doubles partner Danilo Zivanovic of New Mexico State, 7-6, 6-2. Sophomore Colin O'Grady lost his first match to Thibault Schram 6-3, 7-5, and went on to win his other 3 matches to close the weekend 3-1.

In doubles comptetion, Carl Hagman and Colin O'Grady teamed up, while Tim Mullane and NMSU's Danilo Zivanovic paired to form a second team. After a first round bye, the team of Hagman and O'Grady won their next two matches, placing them in the finals. The pair of Mullane and Zivanovic recorded a key victory over Oliver Charrion and Ryan McBride of Arizona State 8-6 in the semifinal round. In the final round Mullane and NMSU's Zivanovic defeated Hagman and O'Grady to capture the doubles title.

Next Apperences: The Wildcats will travel to San Diego to compete in the San Diego All-Collegiate Tournament on Oct. 18-20. Making the trip will be Daniel Andrus, Carl Hagman, Colin O'Grady, Tim Mullane, and Chris Gessner, who will be making his first appearance as a Wildcat. The Wildcats will be facing teams from San Diego, San Diego State, Oregon, Santa Barbara, Loyola Marymount, and Pepperdine.

Fall Tournament Review

Napa Valley Classic: The Wildcats traveled six players, freshman Daniel Andrus, junior Carl Hagman, junior Whi Kim, senior Tom Lloyd, sophomore Colin O'Grady and sophomore transfer Paul Warkentin. The Wildcats played four ranked opponents. Kim matched up against, the No. 6- and 25-ranked players Amer Delic and Brian Wilson of Illinois. Kim dropped both matches, playing the No. 6-ranked Delic strong, but losing in three sets, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-1. Paul Warkentin faced the No. 88-ranked player, Chirs Martin of Illinois, beating him in three sets, 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-3. Lloyd faced the No. 44-ranked player Phil Stolt, and lost in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. In total, the Wildcats finished 7-8 in singles play. O'Grady finished the weekend with a record of 2-1in singles play. In doubles play, the new combination of Andrus and Warkentin combined for the Cats' two doubles wins. The pairs of Kim and O'Grady, and Hagman and Lloyd finished the tournament 0-3.
